Spiritual Practice for Loss and Grief (continued)

I want to share a breathing practice that has been in use for over three thousand years that came to me through the lineage of the great Sufi, Hazrat Inayat Khan. It is a practice that supports clearing and release, and deepens a nourishing, healing connection to the cosmos. It is a simple yet powerful tool that has enabled many people in many kinds of pain to help themselves. For myself, this practice has been a source of deep healing, opening the doors and windows that pain closes, again and again.

Elemental Purification Breath
This practice is a series of four different breaths, done slowly five times each. Stand gently, feet slightly apart with soft knees, facing a window. It's OK to do this practice in bed when you're ill or on cold mornings, and outdoors is wonderful.

1. Earth Breath - In and out nose five times. Relax your feet, legs, and pelvic floor. Drop your bottom. On the in breath, feel the nurturing energy of the earth rise, surrounding and renewing you. Sometimes you can feels this as golden energy rising up your spine. On the out breath, visualize the magnetism of the earth below you drawing and clearing toxins, pain, whatever needs releasing.

2. Water Breath - In nose, out mouth, five times. Relax your reproductive organs and lower abdomen. Visualize standing in a shower or waterfall that is cleansing and refreshing.
