Michael's Healing

Michael
lived in a cage
a beagle
lived in a cage
at Duke
in a cage at
Duke in a lab
in a cage

Michael
retired to the care
of Maggie released
to her care
rescued by Maggie

A woman
unlike the men
who opened the
door of the cage
who opened the
door to the
unspeakable

Michael
never spoke never
a yelp whimper never
a bark whine
his eyes full of
unspeakable
his eyes burning
dark pain
full of cities
tortured and burned
silent

Michael running
away
from the door
bell from visitors
coming out to watch only
the women

Michael exploring the
back yard the grass
still and solid a
carved dog watching
birds
incomprehensibly

Michael day by
day trying
watching the
sky asking the sky
are you?  am I?

Michael one day
answered by gentle
water dropping
kissing smooth ears
and quivering wet on
tail saying Yes!
Yes! his first
rain
